Electric vs Gas vs Steam Ovens for Puffed Snack Lines
The drying oven is a major part of a puffed snack production line. It removes moisture after extrusion and helps establish the final crispness, shelf stability and seasoning performance. For ZEKO snack lines, the oven can be configured for electricity, natural gas or steam. The right choice depends on the factory utilities and the complete project, not only the purchase price of the oven.
Start with the product and required output
Oven selection begins after the final snack and extrusion capacity are defined. Corn sticks, cheese balls, cereal rings, filled snacks and breakfast cereals do not all enter the oven with the same moisture, size or bulk density. The selected extruder establishes the approximate line output, while the oven length, belt area and heating arrangement must be sized to dry that real product without becoming a bottleneck.
Buyers should avoid comparing two ovens only by external dimensions or installed power. Ask what product, inlet moisture, target moisture and throughput were used for the proposed configuration.
Electric heating
An electric oven is usually straightforward to install where the factory has sufficient electrical capacity. Temperature control can be convenient, and the buyer does not need a gas supply line or steam source. The main question is whether the local electrical system can support the complete line, including the extruder, conveyors, oven, seasoning equipment and optional packing machine.
Before selecting electricity, confirm the destination voltage, frequency, phase and available transformer capacity. The supplier should calculate the complete connected load after the final line configuration is selected.
Natural-gas heating
A natural-gas oven may be practical where gas is readily available and its operating cost is favorable. The factory must provide a suitable gas connection and comply with local requirements for ventilation, combustion equipment and safety. Gas pressure and fuel quality should be confirmed before the burner and control system are specified.
The machine quotation should clearly separate the oven equipment from the buyer-side gas pipeline and local installation work. These conditions vary by country and factory.
Steam heating
Steam heating is normally considered when the factory already has a stable steam supply. It can fit plants that use a central boiler for several production processes. Buyers need to provide steam pressure, available flow and connection conditions. If a new boiler is required only for one snack line, the total project cost and local boiler rules should be evaluated before choosing this method.
What changes in the quotation?
The heating method affects more than the heater itself. It can change the oven structure, control components, factory utility connections and installation scope. The final quotation may also be affected by:
- Target snack and hourly output
- Initial and final moisture
- Oven length and belt arrangement
- Destination voltage and electrical standard
- Available gas or steam conditions
- Workshop dimensions and line layout
- Automation and packing connection
Information to send before selection
Provide product photos, raw materials, target capacity, factory voltage, available heat sources and workshop dimensions. ZEKO can then match the oven with the selected extruder and the rest of the puffed snack production line. For a broader drying comparison, see the guide to microwave and hot-air drying.
