Industrial Microwave Dryer Testing Checklist: What to Send Before Requesting a Quote

An industrial microwave dryer cannot be selected accurately from microwave power alone. Two materials processed by the same system may behave very differently because of their moisture content, thickness, density, loading depth and temperature sensitivity.

Before requesting an equipment quotation, the buyer should first define what the process needs to achieve and provide material information that represents normal production. A clear testing brief allows the supplier to evaluate microwave suitability, estimate the required processing section and prepare a more useful quotation.

1. Define the Required Process Outcome

Begin with the result you need—not the machine power.

A microwave system may be evaluated for:

  • Moisture removal and drying
  • Heating or temperature conditioning
  • Sterilization or microbial-control processing
  • Enzyme inactivation
  • Final drying or finishing after another process
  • A combined microwave and hot-air route

These applications require different operating conditions. A drying project is normally evaluated by moisture removal, product temperature, appearance and practical throughput. A sterilization project also needs a clearly defined microbial target, sampling method and validation standard.

If the required outcome is not defined, two quotations may describe very different systems even when their listed power appears similar.

2. Provide a Representative Material Sample

A useful test sample should represent the material that will enter normal production.

The supplier needs to know:

  • Product name and intended application
  • Main ingredients or material composition
  • Product dimensions and shape
  • Whether the material is loose, sticky, fragile, oily or powdery
  • Whether pieces are uniform or vary substantially
  • Normal storage and handling condition before processing
  • Any planned formula or seasonal variation

For sliced meat, seafood, fruit or pet treats, thickness is especially important. A thin, uniform strip does not heat and release moisture in the same way as a thick, folded or irregular piece.

For powder or granular products, bulk density, particle size and the planned loading depth should also be supplied.

3. State the Initial and Target Final Moisture

The equipment supplier needs both the incoming and required final condition.

Useful information includes:

  • Typical initial moisture
  • Expected variation in initial moisture
  • Target final moisture
  • Permitted final-moisture range
  • Moisture measurement method
  • Whether the product needs additional cooling before testing
  • Required storage or packaging condition

A single sample with unusually high or low moisture may produce a misleading test result. When possible, provide samples from several normal production batches or describe the expected operating range.

The quotation should be based on the amount of water that must be removed, not simply the total weight entering the machine.

4. Define Product Thickness and Conveyor Loading

Product thickness and loading pattern affect microwave absorption, heating uniformity and residence time.

Before testing, confirm:

  • Minimum, typical and maximum product thickness
  • Product length and width
  • Loading depth on the conveyor
  • Whether products can overlap
  • Required spacing between pieces
  • Approximate bulk density
  • Expected kilograms per square metre of belt
  • Method used to feed and spread the material

A high belt loading may increase the amount entering the chamber, but it can also change heating uniformity and moisture removal. The practical target is a repeatable product layer that can be maintained during normal factory operation.

5. Set Temperature and Product-Quality Limits

Fast heating is useful only when the finished product remains acceptable.

Tell the supplier which product characteristics must be protected, including:

  • Maximum permitted product temperature
  • Acceptable colour range
  • Aroma or flavour requirements
  • Surface appearance
  • Texture and hardness
  • Shrinkage or deformation limits
  • Risk of scorching, cracking or breakage
  • Nutritional or functional properties that require separate validation

These limits should become part of the test record. A result that reaches the target moisture but damages the product colour, texture or aroma is not a successful commercial process.

6. Specify Real Production Throughput

Hourly capacity should refer to the material entering the microwave system under the agreed conditions.

Provide:

  • Required kilograms per hour
  • Expected working hours per day
  • Number of production days per year
  • Normal and peak production targets
  • Planned number of products or formulas
  • Cleaning and changeover requirements
  • Whether the microwave is the main dryer or a finishing stage

Capacity cannot be determined from microwave power alone. The final result also depends on moisture removal, product loading, residence time, chamber length, belt width, exhaust performance and cooling conditions.

7. Confirm Factory Utilities and Line Interfaces

The microwave equipment must fit the factory as well as the product.

The project brief should include:

  • Available voltage, frequency and phases
  • Permitted installed electrical load
  • Cooling-water conditions
  • Moisture-exhaust and ventilation arrangement
  • Workshop dimensions
  • Available installation height
  • Product feeding height
  • Required discharge height
  • Upstream and downstream equipment
  • Cooling and packing arrangement
  • Local electrical and food-processing requirements

If the microwave system will connect to an existing line, drawings and photos of the feeding, conveying, cooling and packing sections are useful.

How to Define a Useful Material Test

Before the test begins, the buyer and supplier should agree on the test conditions.

The record should include:

  1. Material identity and sample condition
  2. Initial sample weight
  3. Initial moisture
  4. Product dimensions and loading depth
  5. Conveyor speed or residence time
  6. Microwave operating conditions
  7. Product temperature
  8. Final weight and moisture
  9. Appearance, texture and aroma observations
  10. Cooling condition before final evaluation

Testing should use representative material rather than an unusually easy sample. If several product sizes or formulas will be processed, they may require separate tests.

The purpose is not merely to show that the material becomes hot or loses moisture. The test should provide evidence for equipment selection and identify the operating range that produces an acceptable final product.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can ZEKO prepare a quotation from product photos only?

Photos are a useful starting point, but a reliable configuration also requires product dimensions, initial and final moisture, required throughput, temperature limit and intended process outcome. A representative sample is recommended when product quality is sensitive.

Why can’t output be calculated from microwave power alone?

Output depends on how much moisture must be removed and how the material behaves during processing. Loading depth, residence time, belt width, exhaust, product temperature and final-quality requirements all affect practical capacity.

Can one microwave machine dry and sterilize the product?

A system may support both functions for suitable materials, but the conditions and acceptance criteria must be defined separately. Drying performance does not automatically prove a sterilization result.

Does a successful laboratory test guarantee commercial output?

A test provides important process evidence, but commercial sizing must also consider continuous feeding, belt loading, chamber configuration, exhaust, cooling and production stability. The scale-up basis should be stated in the final proposal.
