Twin-Screw vs Single-Screw Extruders for Snack Production

Buyers often ask whether a snack production line needs a twin-screw or single-screw extruder. The answer depends first on how the product expands. Directly expanded snacks and pellet products that expand later during frying follow different processes, so the main machine should not be selected only by motor power or price.

Directly expanded snacks normally use twin-screw extrusion

Corn sticks, cheese balls, cereal rings and many shaped cereal snacks expand as the cooked material leaves the die. For these products, ZEKO normally uses a twin-screw food extruder. The two screws convey, mix and cook the material before it is shaped and cut at the die.

Twin-screw extrusion is useful when a project needs formula flexibility, stable mixing and different molds. Raw materials can include corn flour, rice flour, wheat flour and starch. Actual output still changes with formula moisture, die design, product density, expansion ratio and operating settings.

Single-screw forming is mainly used before frying

In the ZEKO snack process, a single-screw option is used much less often. Its typical role is to form a dense pellet or semi-finished piece that does not fully expand at the extruder outlet. The product is expanded later during frying. This is a different production route from a directly expanded corn puff line.

A buyer planning fried pellets should provide a reference product because the forming, drying and frying sections must be evaluated together. Calling both systems a puff machine can lead to incorrect quotations.

Questions that decide the extruder type

  • Should the snack expand directly at the die or later during frying?
  • What are the main raw materials and approximate formula?
  • What shape, size and internal texture are required?
  • What hourly output is needed?
  • Will the factory produce one product or change molds and formulas?
  • Is the final process dried, baked or fried?

Capacity must be compared with a product basis

For ZEKO directly expanded snack lines, current reference models include ZK-65 at approximately 100 kg/h, ZK-70 at approximately 200-250 kg/h, ZK-85 at approximately 300 kg/h and ZK-90 at approximately 500 kg/h. Larger customized projects can reach approximately 1,000 kg/h, but the model and complete line must be confirmed for the actual snack.

These are reference outputs rather than guarantees for every formula. When comparing suppliers, ask whether the quoted output refers to corn puffs, cereal rings, filled snacks or another product. The mixer, conveyors, oven and seasoning section must also match the extruder output.

Downstream equipment still determines line performance

The extruder is the core machine, but it is not the whole production line. A typical directly expanded snack process includes flour mixing, screw conveying, extrusion, air conveying, oven drying, inclined conveying, seasoning, cooling and optional packing. An undersized oven or seasoning system can restrict the final output even if the extruder is large enough.
