Puffed Snack Line Cost Factors

Two puffed snack production lines with the same stated output can have very different quotations. The difference is not simply supplier margin or extruder size. A complete line must be configured around the finished snack, raw materials, drying load, seasoning method, factory utilities and packing plan. Understanding these factors helps buyers compare proposals on the same basis.

1. Target product and process route

Corn sticks, cheese balls, cereal rings, filled rice snacks and breakfast cereals do not use exactly the same molds or downstream equipment. Directly expanded snacks normally use a twin-screw extruder, while a dense pellet that expands later during frying follows a different process. A quotation should begin with a reference product photo and a clear description of whether the snack is directly expanded, dried, baked or fried.

2. Extruder model and reference capacity

The extruder determines the main output range. ZEKO reference models for directly expanded snacks include ZK-65 at approximately 100 kg/h, ZK-70 at approximately 200-250 kg/h, ZK-85 at approximately 300 kg/h and ZK-95 at approximately 500 kg/h. Larger customized projects can reach approximately 1,000 kg/h, but the final model and equipment scope depend on the actual product.

Reference capacity is not a guarantee for every formula. Corn flour, rice flour, wheat flour and starch behave differently, while moisture, die shape, expansion ratio and product density also affect output. A useful quotation states the product basis behind the capacity.

3. Oven size and heat source

The oven must remove the moisture produced by the selected extruder without slowing the line. Its length, belt area and heating configuration therefore change with capacity and product. For ZEKO puffed snack lines, the oven can use electricity, natural gas or steam. Each option changes the heating components and buyer-side utility requirements.

4. Molds, cutting and filled-snack equipment

Standard shapes and custom shapes use different dies and cutters. A project that needs frequent mold changes or several products should list the required shapes at the quotation stage. Filled snacks also require center-filling equipment and process coordination between the outer shell and filling material. These items should be compared as part of the line rather than added after the main machine is ordered.

5. Seasoning configuration

Seasoning can range from a simple drum to a continuous oil-spraying and powder-dosing system. Available ZEKO options can include a single drum, double drum, single-head octagonal drum or four-head octagonal drum. The correct system depends on output, flavor type, coating uniformity and the number of recipes produced in one shift.

6. Packing and automation

Packing equipment is optional and should be selected according to bag type, target weight, speed and required automation. Manual packing reduces equipment scope but requires more labor. Automatic weighing and packing add cost and need stable product feeding, compressed air and enough workshop space. The packing speed should match the real output of the cooling conveyor.

7. Construction material and destination voltage

The quotation should specify whether stainless steel 201 or stainless steel 304 is used and identify the product-contact scope. Export equipment also needs the destination voltage, frequency and phase. Electrical changes affect motors, heaters, control components and cabinet design, so this information should be confirmed before the final offer.

8. Workshop layout and conveyors

A standard sequence may include a flour mixer, screw conveyor, puffed snack extruder, air conveyor, oven, inclined conveyor, seasoning drum, cooling conveyor and optional packing machine. Workshop columns, doors and clear height can require different conveyor lengths or a non-straight layout. A simple floor plan allows the supplier to quote the correct arrangement.

9. Delivery and project scope

ZEKO’s typical production time is 25-30 days for a complete line and 15-20 days for a single machine after the initial payment. Final timing depends on the confirmed configuration. Installation guidance, training, spare parts, warranty scope and any on-site service should be written clearly in the sales contract instead of assumed from a basic equipment price.

How to compare quotations

Compare the final product, reference capacity, complete equipment list, heat source, materials, voltage, automation and service scope line by line. A lower total can simply mean that the dryer, seasoning or packing section is smaller or excluded.

Build the budget from installed scope, not the machine list

A machinery quotation is only one part of the project budget. Before comparing suppliers, separate the investment into equipment scope and buyer-side factory scope. This makes it clear whether a lower quotation is truly lower cost or simply excludes necessary items.

Ask for a written scope boundary. It should state exactly where the supplier’s responsibility begins and ends for power, fuel, air, water, exhaust, product conveyors, packaging integration and on-site installation. This is the fastest way to compare quotations on the same technical basis.

Use capacity scenarios, not one headline number

A 200 kg/h line can have different investment and operating economics when producing small corn curls, dense cereal pieces, filled products or a premium multigrain snack. The finished-product output, bulk density, dryer duty and packaging speed can change even when the extruder model remains the same.

Prepare at least three scenarios before making an investment decision:

  • Base case: the primary product, target formula and normal pack size.
  • Conservative case: lower utilisation, more changeovers, extra product loss or a slower package format.
  • Growth case: future shift pattern, additional die sets, new packaging format or higher output after market demand is proven.

For each case, calculate annual saleable output rather than theoretical annual hours:

Annual saleable volume = stable packed kg/h x scheduled hours x realistic utilisation x first-pass yield

This identifies whether the business case is most sensitive to market demand, raw-material cost, packaging, energy, labour or line utilisation. It also prevents a common mistake: buying capacity for a theoretical 24-hour operation when the factory will initially run one shift.

Questions to ask before accepting a line price

  1. Which finished snack and formula does the quoted capacity represent?
  2. Is the capacity wet extruder output or accepted packed product?
  3. What moisture enters and leaves the dryer, and what residence time is assumed?
  4. Which molds, cutters and flavoring systems are included?
  5. Which pack sizes and bags-per-minute rate define the packaging scope?
  6. Which utilities and installation works are excluded?
  7. What is included for factory acceptance, commissioning, training and spare parts?
